Spinathon 2009

The Spinathon held on 5 December 2009 in Cape Town, South Africa, was a huge success and US$ 4 000.00 was raised for the charity. Virgin Active was fantastic, and many of the FCS Units were there to support us. The event created a lot of awareness and interest in the organisation and what it stands for. Our special thanks go to Superintendent Jan Swart for being the instigator of this event.

M.A.D about Child Protection Spinnathon

Friends of Child Protection (FCP) in Association with Virgin Active and Canal Walk are hosting a fundraising Spinnathon to raise funds for the much needed Comfort Packs that FCP supplies to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units of the South African Police.

The event will take place on Saturday, 05 December 2009 from 11h00 – 20h00 at La Piazza, Canal Walk Shopping Centre. The general public, cycling clubs and corporate teams are invited to join in the event. The main aim is to get as many people to spin for an hour or for the duration of the event (8hrs) to raise funds and awareness and to do their bit towards making a difference about child protection. The costs are R100 per adult entry for a one hour slot or R50 per entry for a 30 minute slot for children aged 12 – 16 years. Timeslots can be booked by pre-registering. Entry forms are available electronically for pre-registration from Kirstin Lund who can be contacted on 021 – 790 7001 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Entries on the day will also be accepted and timeslots will then be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Apart from the Spinning, there will be comfort packs available on the day which the FCP will try to fill through donations from the public A list of items required for each pack will be made available on the day. “At present, we supply on average between 600 and 700 comfort packs to the 19 FCS units across the Western Cape, to 7 hospitals as well as the Wynberg Courts”, says FCP Chairperson Flo Borchers. “On average one pack costs approximately R55, so our total distribution, taking into consideration donations received, costs up to R25 000 and more per month”, she continued. Since 2006 FCP has supplied more than 14 000 comfort packs to the FCS Units.
